PASSING OF MAVIS MACFADZEAN AND JOAN BEWLEY

PASSING OF MAVIS MACFADZEAN AND JOAN BEWLEY

Phil Healy5 Jan 2024 - 15:07

We recently learnt of the passing of two wives of former Club Stalwarts

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of the wives of two people heavily associated with our club in years gone past.

The 23rd of December saw the passing of Mavis MacFadzean. Mavis was the wife Dr Craig MacFadzean, club player, Hornets captain for many years in the 1970s and 80s, doctor, officer and club supporter for many years. Mavis was also often a visitor at the club with Craig. Latterly they had moved south but kept in touch on a regular basis. Mavis passed away aged 81 and our heartful sympathies go out to Craig, his son Bruce and all the family.
Mavis’s funeral is at Cheltenham Crematorium, Willow Chapel on Friday 12th January 2024 at 10.30am. Family flowers only requested, but donations for Alzheimer's Research UK may be given online at www.masonandstokes.co.uk or sent c/o Mason & Stokes, 54 Hewlett Road, Cheltenham GL52 6AH.

We have also learnt that the 25th December saw the sudden passing of Joan Bewley, aged 71 years. Joan was the wife of former player and long time club coach Mike Bewley who had passed away a number of years ago. Mike is remembered at our club through the annual Mike Bewley Award for Services to Rugby and the Mike Bewley Memorial Match versus Penrith RUFC. In recent years Joan was a regular attendee at these events and it was always a pleasure to see her. The bench and tree in the club’s beer garden are also memorials to Mike, reflecting the input he and his family gave to the club. Mavis’s sudden passing is a shock and we send condolences to Marcus, Nikola and Ben and the wider family.
Joan’s funeral service will be at St. Paul's Church Holme Eden, Warwick Bridge, Carlisle on Monday 15th January 2024 at 2pm, followed by private cremation. Family flowers only, with donations if desired to Cancer Research UK c/o Graeme Kennedy Funeral Director 87 Blackwell Road Carlisle.
