The Great Flood of 2005 remembered

The Great Flood of 2005 remembered

David Morton18 Feb 2013 - 16:26

Apart from the fact that the 1st Xv achieved promotion to Level 6 at the end of the 2004/2005 season, 2005 also be remembered for the severe floods.

January 2005 saw the worst floods in living memory when the east of city was under several feet of water. Carlisle RFC did not escape. Water at cross bar level in the fields, and pretty deep in the clubhouse too.

A commemorative plaque has recently been erected in Burnett's Bar, to mark the water line of that fateful day.
The plaque, crafted of slate from, and by the staff of Honister Slate Mine Ltd, has kindly been gifted to th club by Janice Wilkinson, partner of the late Mark Weir. Mark was a regular visitor to the club and we knew when he was around when his green helicopter was parked on the 1st XV pitch!

Mark was a great friend of the late David Burnett, and it had always been the intention of Mark to donate a plaque to the club.

We are grateful therefore to Janice and the staff at Honister for their skill in creating the plaque and subsequently donating it to Carlisle RFC.

Not only does it record the interior flood level, but it will remind us of Mark and David who had many a chat at the bar.

Thanks again Honister Slate Mine Ltd.
