Match report Under 13s v Tynedale Sunday 2nd April 2017

Bill Glendinning

Carlisle U13s too strong for Tynedale

Another glorious day saw Carlisle travel to Tynedale this Sunday. Having seen Tynedale destroy all who were in front of them the previous Sunday at a 7s tournament we were prepared for a good hard battle.

We took the field and for the first 5 minutes it was a tight affair with both packs of forwards locking horns trying to gain an advantage. Unfortunately the luckless Peter Gower had to be retired from the field of play for the second time in 2 weeks after somebody landed on his ribs on the floor. After a quick reshuffle we moved Archie to 12, Oz to 13 and Billy came on to fill the vacant wing slot.

We now started to get to grips with the game through our pack. With Thomas and Dom leading the charge we were gaining the upper hand at the breakdown. We were producing some good quick ball and with our power houses of Robbie, Archie and Oz in the backline turned this possession into points through a well taken try by Robbie on the wing.

This was the story for most of the half, although we did concede one try late, and we went into the interval 25-5 leaders.

Much of the second half was the same with Tynedale struggling to make any progress into the Carlisle half due to a fantastic team defence that hounded and harassed the opposition at every opportunity. Then came the try of the match, after a coaching master stroke, Ben Tiffen was moved in to the 10 slot and decided to run a switch with inside centre Archie Rattray. Bens timing of the pass to him was impeccable, having taken his opposite man with him the Tynedale defence was completely bamboozled and the hard running centre took off from the half way line and dotted down under the sticks.

The final score being 50-5, Robbie showing his class with another Hat trick, Archie and Dom with a brace each. Hats off to Tynedale, they never gave up and played hard right til the end.

All of the lads stood up and played well with the pack leading the way and making the backs look good as usual……

We also had a second team fixture against their 2nd team, and Carlisle having been hammered in the previous meeting played some outstanding rugby and managed to run out winners of this clash, a good sign that the whole of the squad is moving forwards.

Another great day for the parents and lads
