The city side kicked off and put the visitors under pressure as they set up camp in their half. The early play was dominated by the Carlisle pack, who in the tight were superb all day. Carry after carry they ran at the westmorland line but struggled to find the brekthrough they desired.
At times the first half play was sloppy but at others it was brilliant. Carlisle skwandered chances in their opponents 22, but on their own 22 showed desire, heart and committment to keep the visitors at bay.
Captain Mike Newstead led from the front and put in a captain's performance with the ball in hand and defence. His fellow prop Ashley Reid made good lengthy carries but at times his team mates failed to supply the support he desired. Defensively Carlisle were solid in the backs and made the relevant tackles all game.
Eventually the visitors got a score wide out just after half time which was converted superbly. At 7-0 Carlisle may have folded in earlier games, but today hit back relentlessley. A well taken quicck tap under the sticks from No.8 Chris Green brought them within 2 points and minutes later a canny bit of handling from the backs found the ball in the hands of 13 jake Evans who went 50m to score wide out.Carlisle managed to hold out to take the game on a very good performance.
The man of the match award went to the whole team.
